Saw's BBQ

Saw's took the place of Broadway BBQ in Homewood. They seem to be staying busy and have heard many good things about them. We got the pulled pork with potato salad and cole slaw. The sauce is sweet and seems to be vinegar based. I am not sure if the meat is basted in the sauce but it is very juicy and it can be eaten without anything added. Potato salad was dill based and very good. Cole slaw was also good.

Go, speed racer

I've tweaked the map settings on the home page of bbqhunt.com a bit to make the map render quite a bit faster. It's now clustering map points so it's not trying to draw every single point on the page. Our friend from NC has offered to help with some more map optimization, too, when we get some time to sort out what we need. I want rib symbols as the map markers ;)

Good barbecue road trip story

I was surfing around today and found a pretty good barbecue road trip story on the MSNBC site. Apparently, two brothers who are writers have been traveling to try to find the best barbecue restaurants in the country, and the story talks about several of the places they've hit along the way.
Check it out here:

Stokin' the Fire BBQ competition

So I was feeling pretty rough today--either allergies or a cold--but the smoke from the Stokin' the Fire BBQ Festival at Sloss Furnace lured me out of the house to shoot some pictures.
I downloaded all the shots from my camera in a gallery here: http://bbqhunt.com/image/tid/17

Not Yo' Momma's

Not Yo Momma's Smokey Habanero Hot Sauce

My wife and I have been working on a bottle of Not Yo' Momma's smokey habanero hot sauce made locally in Homewood, Al. I am not a man of many words. I know what I like and what I don't like. This is a good sauce with not too much "hot" to overpower the taste of the sauce. I don't like to cry while eating food but I still want a bit of a kick. I have tested on everything from nachos to pulled pork. I highly recommend this hot sauce.

Sticky Fingers Carolina Classic

If you grew up in the Midlands of South Carolina, particularly near Columbia, your barbecue sauce is very likely to be some shade of yellow.
It's ain't cowardice, though, it's mustard. Mustard-based sauce generally mixes the tang of mustard with some vinegar and enough sweetness to keep it from getting too sharp.
Sticky Fingers' version of mustard-based sauce, called Carolina Classic, is thin enough to properly run down through the fibers of pulled pork, but in sufficient quantities it'll coat a rack of ribs fairly well.

Restaurant reviews

Dixie's

Seattle is not known as a haven for good BBQ, and with good reason. However, Dixie's is about as good as BBQ gets in the Emerald City, for a few reasons.

Operating hours:

Noon to 5:00, Monday through Saturday

Spring Creek BBQ

This is a very popular and prolific chain BBQ restaurant in the Dallas area, and with good reason. Or should I say Reasons. My experience is mainly with the location in Plano, north of Dallas.

First, the food. The pork ribs are excellent with just the rub or with either of their sauces (mild/smoky). The chicken, brisket, and sausage are all quite tasty as well. The sides are many, and since you serve yourself in cafeteria style, you can choose from several options. None were outstanding, but most were edible.

12 Bones

This nondescript place, located in an industrial area seemingly far from anything, was crowded even before noon, and gives the impression that it is so daily. The interior is a real eclectic mix, with lots of stickers on the walls around old benches and tables. It looked like a BBQ place in a trendy neighborhood of a big city would look. The clientele ranged from college aged couples to old regulars, for there was truly something to please every palate and personality here.

Dan's Smokehouse

Another hole-in-the-wall place. Nothing fancy, but good solid food in a nice clean place with good atmosphere. Brisket was the best I ever had. Even without the sauce it was fantastic; very moist, lean and flavorful. With it, it was even better. Ribs were very tender, but were kinda fatty. Beans were ok, but had a sweet taste whose origin we couldn't identify. Deviled eggs were the other side, and the ham was very blah. Beef sausage was very average, kinda dry and nothing special flavor-wise.

Dreamland BBQ

Wow. At Dreamland, it's all about the sauce. This is the first place that had one sauce that worked with all things VERY well. The meat was good without it, but was GREAT with it.

The Chicken had a rub on it that added just enough spice to flavor up the chicken without overpowering it. Best chicken of the trip. This is a regional favorite for a reason. Desserts were Banana pudding with crushed up vanilla wafers and whipped cream, and an Apple cobbler ala mode, both of which were outstanding.
