Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt

There are puh-lenty of BBQ places in the Greater Atlanta Metro Area, and I'm slowly exploring all of 'em. First off, the legendary Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt.

You drive up, and it looks like just another dive. A dive painted with portraits of blues legends, true, but a dive nonetheless. Okay, yeah, a dive with giant cut-out letters over the door reading "I'm Dyin For Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt." So it ain't yer typical dive. But like it says on their website, "We ain't pretty, but we're good."

Added a new review type

You can now review sauces on http://bbqhunt.com. Karl wanted us to review hot sauces because they have a healthy collection at home, and that reminded me that we had been discussing trying out the new Budweiser branded barbecue sauce that was in the Sunday coupon inserts this week. Plus, I'm still looking for some good wing sauces. So add your favorite sauces. Just click the "create content" menu on the right and pick sauce review.

Crios Malbec Rose

Yes, I know I am in the minority. Wine instead of beer with BBQ? But, I love a cold Rose with BBQ. Crios is an Argentine winery. And, Argentina means Malbec! So, it stands to reason that Crios Rose is made with Malbec grapes. The Malbec makes it crisp and dry, while still having enough fruit to compliment the complex flavors of a good BBQ sauce or rub. I even break the wine drinkers' rule on occasion and drop a couple of cubes of ice into it on a sultry August evening in Mississippi. Tacky but tasty!

Cheerwine

Cheerwine

Cheerwine is a soft drink found in the Carolinas that tastes sort of like a mix of cherry cola with a hint of Dr. Pepper. Many people find it a bit too sweet for their palates, but it's one of my favorite soft drinks out there. I've been known to load several cases in the car because I can't buy it in Birmingham.

Cajun Seasoned Grilled Shrimp

I've been grilling just about everything with seasonings from Tex-Joy for almost 20 years now. You can't go wrong with any of the flavors.

You'll need to order them online as I have never seen them in a store. I recommend the "Gift pack" and you will get a sampling of most all of the flavors. (It comes in a box shaped like Texas which is kinda cool too.)

Here's the site: http://www.texjoy.com/

Here's the link to the gift box.

Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan

This is one of the best beers I have ever had. We need it in south carolina!!!!! Take newcastle, add more flavor, slap your momma, and you got Southern Pecan.

Restaurant reviews

Sticky Fingers - Downtown Charleston

Billed as Memphis BBQ but has six different sauces including splendid mustard-based Carolina. Food came in large portions. I had the pulled pork sandwich with Carolina sauce. Came with fries.

Quick service. Sweet Tea was just that. Perfect, got one to go.
This is a chain started in Mount Pleasant. Deserves a taste when visiting in Charleston.

The GA Pig

This photogenic, rustic southern, sweet spot off of I-95 Exit 29 in Georgia determines how early in the day we hit the road to travel. Get there early enough during the lunch hours and you've got yourself some mighty fine, lip-smackin', fall-off-the-bone ribs. Get there after 1pm and the locals have eaten up all those ribs. Too bad you'll just have to settle for their delicious chopped pork or beef instead. Although they're in Brunswick, their Brunswick stew isn't the best, so stick to the ribs from these rib experts.

Allman's Pit Cooked Bar-b-q

Allman's is a fixture in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Opened in 1954, it' s got a cool lunch counter and a great vintage sign on a little brick building near downtown. I will TRY to find the "Best of" video story my vegetarian friend and Fredericksburg.com reporter did on Allman's several years ago--it's pretty funny...
PeteC took the awesome night shot of the Allman's.

The Shed

Some BBQ joints are born from a superior sauce, a wonderful rub recipe or a win at Memphis in May or Kansas City. The Shed, however, came to be out of a need to find something to do with all of the junk a college student had collected through his years of dumpster diving and garage sailing. The unimposing structure, built of second hand materials, in Ocean Springs, MS, is decorated with ...well...junk from Brad Orrison's rummaging days. And, on Saturday nights, Blues are played on the outdoor stage in The Shed's backyard.

The American BBQ

The American BBQ is an oddity in Massachusetts for its complete menu of true 'cue. The restaurant, in a quiet hamlet just south of Newburyport, serves expertly smoked ribs and pork. Someone there has also learned their way around Soutnern vegetables.
