Ole Time Barbecue

When a barbecue restaurant sells itself as, "A Great Place to Get PORKED," you can only hope that it's more of a promise than a threat. As it turns out, Ole Time Barbecue provides the good kind of "PORKED."

The place scores plenty of character points by being one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it, roadside hole-in-the-walls that's pretty much guaranteed to pump out some good BBQ.

There aren't a ton of tables, so be prepared to wait if things are hopping. But soon as you sit down, you're welcomed with a huge basket of hushpuppies...piping hot and addictively sweet.

IPhone app for grilling?

My friend Al Gibes talks about Weber's iPhone app for grillers at the Las Vegas Review Journal: http://bit.ly/8eYRr
Al writes a great tech column--didn't know he was a carnivore, but that will need to be explored on my next Vegas excursion.

Cheese biscuits

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
Grease 12 regular muffin pans, or even better, use mini muffin pans or the little silicon muffin molds.
Mix the dry ingredients (except the cheese) in a bowl with a fork.
Beat the egg, milk, butter and vanilla together in another bowl.
Pour the wet into the dry. Mix it up gently with a spoon--it doesn't need to be real smooth.
Now dump the cheese in the bowl and mix it up.
Spoon the mixture into the muffin cups.
Bake for 15-20 minutes. They're done when a toothpick or fork comes out clean. Serve with butter.

Welcome to BBQHunt.com

Let's get one thing perfectly clear from the beginning.
From our perspective, grilling meat and barbecue are not the same thing.
We know that people from parts of the country that get more than their fair share of snow tend to get confused on this issue. So we want to settle it from the very beginning so nobody's confused.

Come on baby, light my fire

Despite the fact that lighter fluid makes all the pyromaniacal juices in my body bubble over in joy, it's really not a good way to start charcoal for cooking.
The petroleum products in the fluid smoke up the meat you're cooking, and they impart a chemical flavor to the meat. Plus, to be honest, you've really got to soak coals with fluid to get them to light well, and the more you've got on the coals, the more time it takes to burn off.
The solution to lighting your fire is a more simple--and frankly much more effective--tool called a chimney lighter.

Restaurant reviews

Golden Rule BBQ

Golden Rule BBQ, according to the company's Web site, started WAYYYYY back in 1891 in Irondale, Alabama. In 1973, they opened a second location on US 31 in Hoover, and sold it to a franchisee in 1976. Now they've got several locations in Alabama and one in Tennessee. That includes the Birmingham Airport location that infuses the whole entry hall with hickory smoke smells.

Sticky Lips Pit BBQ

You will, no doubt, wait in a line to eat at Sticky Lips Pit BBQ in Rochester, NY.

Actually, it isn't a line at all.

You'll be waiting in two small adjoining rooms with dozens of people listening for your name to be called before you head upstairs for a table.

(The folks that keep the list and call the names also have well-stocked beverage coolers behind them and under the counter where they are more than happy to take drink orders to all who are waiting).

This place is popular. The food is worth the wait.

Beale Steet Cafe

Every day is Mardi Gras at Beale Street Cafe in Webster and downtown Rochester, NY as authentic Cajun cuisine is on a menu that includes various kinds of pit-smoked BBQ.

This is one of my wife's favorite restaurants in the Rochester area.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que has three locations in New York so there is no excuse for missing this eatery if you are in the area. We're regulars at the Rochester, New York location. It is a great place to take out-of-town visitors because the food is always predictably good and the atmosphere of the building and the downtown riverfront setting is unique.

I'll almost bet anyone that they will have a hard time finishing any regular entree as the plates are large and the food is stacked high.

Get there early when there is a band playing live blues.

The Smokey Pig Restaurant

Since opening on September 6th, 1978, The Smokey Pig Restaurant has become a landmark for local residents and travelers who appreciate its "elegantly informal" atmosphere and fine home cooked foods. "The Pig" is not only famous for its Hickory Smoked Barbecue, but for the vast variety of home cooked and southern style meals made on premises daily.
